AN/PVS-7B parts search
I just picked up a PVs-7b here in Japan for pretty cheap. The problem is...the guy selling it described it as missing the "middle lens". When I go it...this translated into "no tube".

Now, I‘m new to US gear as I have mostly worked with the Russian goodies. I opened this up, no big trick there. The back plate seems to be intact but I don‘t know.

I have found I need to locate a collimator and a tube for this piece.

Questions:

What holds the two eye pieces in place? They just kind of float around.
What do these 2 LEDs inside the housing do? I only have one "socket" on one of the eye pieces.
Does anything go between the objective lens and the tube?
What are these two electronics under the switch assy? One looks like a photocell and the other....I dunno, maybe an emitter (IR I might guess). One has blue and white wires going to it, the other orange and green.

What kinds of prices am I looking at for tubes and a collimator, most info I have found is dated atleast 2 years ago and no one posts publicly their prices.

I had just purchased a Cillimator for $225, but you will have fun trying to get someone to ship it to a APO or overseas if you are still there..

Tube prices are all over the place.. You can find good ones that are Spot-Spec rated, which means that they have a couple too many spots to be considered commercial tube, but they will still have a Spec Sheet, and be under warranty.. I found a few for about $1050 each..

Based on your description of the "sockets and LED‘s",, you may have more of a problem than you think if the eye pieces don‘t have a place or socket for the LED‘s.. You may need a rear eye cover, which is about another $225..

Good luck with your project,

Thanks for the reply. I‘ll be moving back to the states next year, I‘m just stock piling these parts for when I arrive.

The 1050usd tubes you‘re talking about, are they gen3? How bad were the spots?

One eye piece has a black tube type socket/fitting glued to the mirror(?). The other doesn‘t, there doesn‘t even seem to be any residue from it. What does the IR and Low Batt indicator look like through the eye pieces? In reality, I can just tape up the LED on the missing side and deal with it as parts and funds come around. Its not integral to the system from what I can see.

I only buy Gen3 tubes, and don‘t do this for a living.. I repair and build system for personal use for myself and some organizations / departments I have been affiliated with. The spots are not bad to me as I don‘t expect a flawless sceen.

As for your wired body housing, you may be able to get away with 1 of the LED‘s on one of the eyepieces, but I have never had one with only one.. I imagine you will probably only get a good image on the side with the one LED, but I don‘t know for sure.. There are lots of knowledgable people on this forum, so I know someone will chime in after the holidays..

You wouldn‘t happen to be in Okinawa? I was stationed there many years ago.. Good luck with your project.

I can live with flawed as long as its not disruptive. This is for fun use anyway.

The LEDs, as outlined in the manual, are to indicate low battery and the the IR lamp is on. I was thinking about it, they wouldn‘t be for anything else...any extra light coming in would wash out the image coming from the tube.

No, I‘m in Shikoku. I went to Okinawa this summer...I could live there. My only problem is theres no Costco on that island. Okinawa is a beautiful island though. As someone who lived there, what are the storms like?

The Typhoons in Okinawa were nasty, but fun to ride out. I worked on the RC-135‘s out of Kadena, so the planes were always being evacuated when a storm came close. They would go to tough places like Guam or Clark, AB in the Philipines.. All play, and no work...

I was single and fresh out of tech school when I was there in ‘84-‘85.. Okinawa was a great place.

When you get back to a Conus assignment, you should have no problem finding the parts you need to get that fixed or working right. Enjoy your time over there..
