| Help! Dead PVS 502 |
| The 502 is my collection and has been collecting dust in its case. I only turn it on once every year. Yesterday I tried turning it on and got nothing, no humming, no light. I put in a new set of batteries and still nothing, but the batteries drained fast, dropping from 12.4V to 11.5V in 4 minutes and were very warm when removed. However leaving the 11.5V bateeries in seemed to have no further effect. The batteries would not warm up nor drain further. It would only drain new batteries. Has the power supply finally packed it in? Pls help! |

| PVS502 dead, just a maybe |
Could be the power supply but the rapid voltage drop makes me wonder if you put the batteries in backwards (polarity reversed). Pretty sure that will make the batteries warm or even hot. Just a WAG.
Best to ya,

| Thanks John, but no, that was the first thing I checked. The 502 has + - sign marking on the battery case and I have tried both A23 and GP 23AE batteries, sadly no luck. |

| Darn, that‘s a shame |

It was a stab in the dark. Too bad it wasn‘t something that simple. Have you dropped a line to Ed Wilcox? Maybe he‘s got an idea.
Good luck my friend and let us know what you figure out.

| Its just that sort of days when nothing goes right. At first I thought the batteries didn‘t have enough amp, may be fake GP or something. Then I bought new ones and wasted 3 more sets before believing that I now have a battery monster on my laps. Hope I have not burned anything beyond repair. It is likely that the stepup coils had short circuited with age, no humming no stepup. BTY is there any fuse in there? My last resort is to build a new power supply that is if I know the spec. Another option is to put an old MX-9644 but the focus are all wrong. Hell of a job. |

| Replace the tube? |
Why not just install a new tube? You can still get them on ebay and you can even get new tubes from the UK ( By new, I mean not previously used, but old ). The UK tubes are very high gain - around 100,000x and give Gen2 and Gen3 a run for their money.
They are not expensive.
An mx9644 will not perform as well ( even if it‘s new ) and is way too short to fit correctly. The eyepiece focus won‘t work.

| Dead 502 |
| David, Thanks for your advice. Can I still find 502 tube in UK sites? Could you please point me to the URL? I have G3 monoculars and so the 502 is really a collection but if I can get get it working again that would be a bonus. I use NV mainly in airsoft games. The 502 apart from being an overkill (unable to focus on objects under 20ft), was surprisingly a disadvantage. The reflective lens would bounce any light shining in my dirction right back and expose my position. :-( Edwin |

| More 25mm tubes. |
| StarlightNV claimed to have unissued tubes when I spoke to them - though I can‘t verify the claim, so let me know if you find out. They cost about 3 times as much as the used tubes, but I‘m told are guaranteed quality. I hope this helps :) |

| Saviour !!! |

| David, thank you indeed! I shall contact Starlight and Anchor after I disassembled my 502 to get the exact dimension of my tube. Hopefully the 3V-7.5V Anchor/Starlight tube will be a drop in replacement of the 502 tube which requres 24V. I won‘t mind spending a bit of extra for a good tube though it is unlikely that I would ever really use the 502 in any game except for prop up in 1980 uniforms. You are one lucky fellow. My 502 was never comparible to my ITT in truely dark condition, and it would always leave a redish tint in my sight. Cheers. |

David, What should I do to PM you. Tried right click your user name with no effect.
BTY I always thought that the 502 was nitrogen purged but having removed the tube I could see no way this configoration could hold nitrogen not to mention under any pressure. Its like you need to purge it every day! What a silly design!
The 502 ues a 18mm intensifier that measures 53.85mm in dia. 159mm long. Its a Varo Part no. 510-1475-300. The Anchor tube are too long (185mm/20cm). I am waiting for both Anchor and Starlight to reply but my hope for a quick rescure looks slim. My last resort is of cource to use the shell of the intensifier to enclose a thin non-inverted 18mm Gen2 (which I have) plus 2 lens to adjust the image plane. Hack of a job. I can keep dreaming. ;-(....... |

| Sorry, Wrong tube. |
Hi Edwin,
To send me a PM, just click on my name while logged on.. That‘s all you need to do.
Sorry, I thought it was the 25mm tube you needed.
Speak to Starlight then about an 18mm 3-stage tube. I believe he may be able to help you as I think he has some, though I don‘t think they are unissued.

Dear David, Thank you mate. I did click on your name but was returned with "javascript.void(0)", whatever that means. My email is camelite@hotmail.com
Anchor had replied that thay do not have stock, that leaves only Starlight. New or used doesn‘t really matter just a matter of price, the tubes are going to die eventually. I heard for vacuum tubes, they are better off swicthed on occationaly rather than sitting idle for 30 summers. Edwin |
